Common application fields for directional and horizontal drilling are in offshore and onshore when there is no way of drilling vertical wells. During directional and horizontal well drilling, many additional challenges occur when compared with vertical well drilling, such as limited weight on bit, harder hole cleaning, trajectory control, etc. This makes even harder to select the proper drilling parameters for increasing the rate of penetration. This study aims to propose a rate of penetration model considering many drilling parameters and conditions. The proposed model is a modified Bourgoyne & Young s model which considers formation compaction, formation pressure, equivalent circulating density, and effective weight on bit, rotation of the bit, bit wear, hole cleaning, inclination, fluid loss properties and bit hydraulics. Also, a bit wear model is developed for roller cones and PDCs. The model performance is tested using field data obtained from several directional and horizontal offshore wells drilled at Persian Gulf. It is observed that the model can estimate rate of penetration with an error of ±25 % when compared with the field data.
The phenomenon of peristaltic transport has increased interest from researchers / investigators in several disciplines of engineering science. From a mechanical point of view peristalsis offers, constructing pumps in which the transported medium does not come in direct contact with any moving part (valves, rotors and plungers). This can be of great beneficial when medium is decomposable or highly abrasive under stress. Peristaltic flow problems are unsteady moving boundary value problems where the shape of the wave on flexible tube or channel is not known in priori and it deals with a prescribed train of waves moving on the boundaries. Pumping of fluids through flexible tubes by means of the peristaltic wave motion of the tube wall has been the subject of engineering and scientific research for over few decades. Engineers and physiologists term the transport of such fluids as peristaltic pumping. It is a form of fluid transport induced by a progressive wave of area contraction or expansion along the walls of a distensible duct containing a liquid or mixture. Besides its various engineering applications (e.g.heart-lung machines, finger and roller pumps, etc.

It is an automatic and vital process that moves food through the digestive tract, urine from the kidneys through the ureters into the bladder, and bile from the gallbladder into the duodenum. The transport phenomenon created by peristalsis is an interesting problem because of its application in understanding many physiological transport processes through vessels under peristaltic motion. Roller and finger pumps using viscous fluids also operate on this principle. Here the tube is passive but is compressed by rotating rollers, by a series of mechanical fingers or by a notating plate.Many researchers considered the fluid to behave like a Newtonian fluid for physiological peristalsis including the flow of blood in arterioles.Flow through a porous medium has been of significant interest in recent years particularly among geophysical fluid dynamics. Examples of natural porous media are beach sand, sandstone, limestone, rye bread, wood, the human lung, bile duct, gall bladder with stones and in small blood vessels.

Peristalsis is seen in the ureters which are tubular organs connecting the kidneys to the bladder. It is an automatic and vital process that moves food through the digestive tract, urine from the kidneys through the ureters into the bladder, bile from the gall bladder into the duodenum, ovum in the fallopian tube, lymph in the lymphatic vessel and so on. Technical roller and finger pumps also operate according to the principle of peristaltic transport. Due to diversity of fluids, several models have been suggested in the literature. The inadequacy of the theory of Newtonian fluids in predicting the behavior of some fluids, especially those of high molecular weight leads to the development of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics. The governing equations of non-Newtonian fluids are much more non-linear and higher order than the Navier-Stokes equations. The computations of such equations offer interesting challenges to the workers in the field. With these facts in mind we mainly propose here to study the peristaltic flows of non-Newtonian fluids.
